Band

The R.K. Smith Band is actively involved in our community through various performances throughout the school year. Our students perform in a winter concert and spring concert both of which take place at R.K. Smith. Students are also given the opportunity to try out and perform with the district honor band and parish honor band. Finally, students are provided a unique opportunity to become a member of the drum line in which performances take place at the school and in the community.

The following are the musical standards that are implemented in our class:

Creating

1. Imagine-Generate musical ideas for various purposes and contexts

2. Evaluate and Refine-Evaluate and refine selected musical ideas to create musical work that meets appropriate criteria

3. Plan and Make-Select and develop musical ideas for defined purposes and contexts

4. Present-Share creative musical work that conveys intent, demonstrates craftsmanship, and exhibits originality

Performing

1. Select-Select varied musical works to present based on interests, knowledge, technical skill, and context

2. Analyze-Analyze the structure and context of varied musical works and their implications for performance

3. Interpret-Develop personal interpretations that consider creators' intent

4. Rehearse, Evaluate, and Refine-Evaluate and refine personal and ensemble performances, individually or in a collaboration with others

5. Present-Perform expressively, with appropriate interpretation and technical accuracy, and in a manner appropriate to the audience and context

Responding

1. Select-Choose music appropriate for a specific purpose or context

2. Interpret-Support interpretations of musical works that reflect creators'/performers' expressive intent

3. Analyze-Analyze how the structure and context of varied musical works inform the response

4. Evaluate-Support evaluations of musical works and performances based on analysis, interpretation, and established criteria

Connecting

1. Connecting is embedded in Creating, Performing, and Responding. Synthesize and relate knowledge and personal experiences to make music. Relate musical ideas and works to varied contexts and daily life to deepen understanding
