Dr. Ami Houston

I am thrilled to be part of the Administrative Team at R. K. Smith Middle School!  Seeing numerous facets of public education in my experiences in both Texas and Louisiana, I truly believe that our role as educators is one of the most important in society, as we partner with families to create dynamic citizens who will radically impact their communities when they leave our schools.  It is our goal, that when they do leave our care, that they are equipped to be successful and empowered in their unique talents and skills, embarking on their new journey as impactful and wonderfully productive members of society.

This school year marks my fourteenth year in education.  I graduated in 2009 from Dallas Baptist University with my Bachelor’s Degree in 4-8 Education.  I began my teaching career in 2008, teaching 6th, 7th, and 8th Grade Math and Math Intervention in a rural community in West Texas.  I also taught 1st Grade and went on to teach English I to 10th Graders and coach Girls Track and Field.  During this time, I earned my Masters of Educational Leadership Degree from Dallas Baptist University.  After falling in love with New Orleans and the surrounding areas, my family and I moved to St. Charles Parish in 2017, and my first role here was teaching 8th Grade ELA at Harry Hurst Middle School.  During my time at Hurst, I went on to teach 6th Grade Math Intervention, 7th Grade Advanced Math, 8th Grade Algebra I, and 8th Grade Math.  I also earned my Doctor of Organizational Leadership Degree from Abilene Christian University in 2018.

In January of 2022, I began a new branch of my career when I was appointed as an Assistant Principal of R. K. Smith Middle School.  Here, I have the distinct pleasure of working with a faculty and staff of amazing teachers and leaders who believe in the importance of our role as educators and make it their priority to impact our students and community daily.  My favorite part of my role here is that I also get to work with a school full of world-changing students!   I am truly honored to serve at R. K. Smith and wholeheartedly believe in the Power of One- One Mind, One Mission, One Vision, One R. K. Smith, and that’s Kids FIRST!
